Dylan Marie Dreyer was born on August 2, 1981, in Manalapan Township, New Jersey. She was raised by her parents, Jim and Linda Dreyer, alongside her two brothers, Mike and James. Growing up on the Jersey Shore, Dylan developed a fascination with the weather, particularly winter storms, which later inspired her career path. She attended Manalapan High School, where she was a standout student and athlete, participating in varsity sports. After graduating, she enrolled at Rutgers University, earning a bachelor's degree in meteorology in 2003. Dylan married NBC News cameraman and producer Brian Fichera on October 6, 2012. The two met while working early shifts at WHDH in Boston and became close friends before their relationship turned romantic. They share three sons: Calvin, born December 17, 2016; Oliver, born January 2, 2020; and Russell James, born September 29, 2021. Russell arrived six weeks early, weighing five pounds, five ounces, and spent a week in the neonatal intensive care unit before being cleared to go home.

In November 2021, Dreyer opened up on "Today" about the intense challenges of raising three young boys, sharing:

"Brian and I have gotten onto shifts. I sleep from nine to midnight, and Brian sleeps from one to six… it's the only way we're kind of doing it right now, because three kids is no joke."

She has also been candid about her fertility struggles. While trying to conceive a second child, Dylan suffered a miscarriage and was diagnosed with secondary infertility. She underwent surgery to remove uterine scarring caused by an emergency C-section during Calvin's birth. Just as she and Brian were preparing to begin in vitro fertilization (IVF), Dylan discovered she was pregnant naturally—a surprise she later described as a miracle.
